| Clark Walding, who lives and works in Cerrillos, NM, primes his canvases with 12 to 15 layers of gesso. The layers are sanded only lightly, so that the tooth of the canvas is not obliterated. Color (oil/alkyd/wax) is applied with a painter's knife to pack the paint into the texture of the canvas, rather than laying the paint on top. This method causes multiple layers to blend in a seamless way, and allows the viewer to look through the layers. Content shifts from moment to moment, as the light shifts. |
